CA Legislature now a Dem supermajority

Nov. 7, 2012

Katy Grimes: Many in California expected the Democrats to gain a supermajority in the state Senate. But few thought that a Democrat supermajority would happen in the Assembly.

Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez announced that Democrats have secured a supermajority in Assembly. The result will give Democrats the ability to raise taxes on their own as long the Senate votes along with them.

The last time the California Democrats had supermajority in both houses was 1883, according to Democrat strategist Steve Maviglio. This is definitely a ‘be careful what you wish for’ moment.

But there are several really close Assembly races that are either awaiting final votes to be counted, or are just too close to call.

The race between Assembly incumbent Chris Norby, R-Fullerton, and Democrat challenger, Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk Silva, is too close as well. Norby has 49.5 percent, and Silva has 50.5 percent.

Democrat Rudy Salas has a slim lead over Republican Pedro Rios in the race for Assembly District 32. Salas has 50.2 percent, Rios 49.8 percent.

Incumbents win

It was a night for California incumbents and the status quo, as nearly every legislative incumbent in the state won.

However, there are a few Assembly races too close to call.

Assembly race for District 50 between Assemblywoman Betsy Butler, D-El Segundo, and Richard Bloom, also a Democrat, is stalled at 49,9 percent for Butler, and 50.1 percent for Bloom.

The Norby-Silva race is still too close to call.

And Assemblyman Michael Allen, D-Santa Rosa, and challenger, Democrat Marc Levine, is also too close; Allen 49.4 percent, and Levine with 50.6 percent of the vote.

  3. NTHEOC says:

Ok, I’ll be a humble winner.NOT!!!! CONGRATULATIONS to the labor and middle class of not only california but the nation!!! OBAMA 4 more for 44 baby! Down goes prop 32!! Passing of prop 30!! City of huntington beach votes yes to keep “”PENSION TAX”" in place, now thats a city that knows the truth and cares!!!! VICTORY to the people!!!!

  4. barb says:

Agree John! Thanks calwatchdog, you all are great!

  5. SeeSaw says:

So, you prefer Texas? Don’t let the door hit you………………….

  6. Bob says:

I thought there was virtually no way the DemoNcrats could get 2/3rds in the Assembly.

    This is truly a nightmare.

  7. barb says:

No problem seesaw! I grew up in Texas and its a fine, great state.

  8. Bob says:

So now the DemoNcrats will be able to raise taxes as high as they want.

None of those silly ballot iniatives needed.

As I recall when they were wrangling with Ahnode to get tax increases they were demanding much higher taxes than what Ahnode agreed to. Well now, they can ram through even higher taxes.

Will anyone finally listen and do something to split the state up now?

  9. Bob says:

    I really am shocked.

I was saying the most important thing in this election was not Prop 30 or even Prop 38 possibly passing.

It was the DemoNcrats getting a 2/3rds majority.

But everyone I talked to assured me that could never happen.

I told them if it did happen it’s lights out for Colliefornia.

If you think taxes are high now, you ain’t seen nothing!

  10. barb says:

    Yep Bob,.if u can, rent a UHaul!

  11. NTHEOC says:

    Hey barb and bob,
You two sound like a good match! Mabye you guys could go in halves and rent a uhaul together, and it would be more fun looking at the trailor parks in texas together to!!! Hmmmmm, I have a feeling about you two….

  12. barb says:

No NTh, it will be you living in a trailer when your pension pool runs out. Thats what Im thinking! All feelings aside.

Lets see, dow down how many points?

  13. Ulysses Uhaul says:

    CWD losers….

You bark, belch and scratch your armpits in your moonshine stained survival long johns, and you expect to appeal to the MODERNS and the masses devoted to more relatism.

    You have to adapt…get it….your the fringe….laughable….ignored….

  14. Ulysses Uhaul says:

    Moral relatism

  15. SeeSaw says:

The Republicans asked for this, by their refusal to work with the Democrats by supporting the Governor in his desire to place an extension of the 2009 tax increases on the ballot, so all California voters could act on it. Don’t blame the Democrats, Bob–you people are your own worst enemies! Democrats are very generous, pragmatic people–unlike you selfish Republicans.

  16. Bob says:

One other thing you all should know about the Democrats having a super majority in the state legislature.

They will be able to override a governor’s veto.

So even if Brown comes to his senses and vetos a tax increase they can still override his veto.

Essentially, you are going to have the most radical tax hikers calling the shots now at the state level.

I don’t think people comprehend this yet.

We already have the highest taxes but things are going to get much worse.

The DemoNcrats winning a 2/3rds majority in the state legislature was much bigger news than Prop 30 passing.

As far as importance, it is on par with Obama winning.

  17. SkippingDog says:

Proposition 30 passes. Proposition 32 is soundly defeated. We have a Democratic supermajority in both houses of our legislature and a Democratic Governor.

This has truly become a great day for us here in California!

  18. Sean Morham says:

this should be fun to live through. We get closer to the tipping point, and whatever that brings.

  19. Bob says:

That’s right Skipping Dog, the Republicans are now totally irrelevant.

The DemoNcrats will have no one to blame now as the state descends to Hell.

  20. Dyspeptic says:

So how’s that redistricting “reform” working out Crazyfornia. Like I new all along, you can’t reform the system because “You can’t fix stupid”.

Speaking of stupid, you embarrass yourself without even realizing it Uhaul-

“and you expect to appeal to the MODERNS and the masses devoted to more relatism.”

    “Moral relatism”

I believe the word you are looking for is RELATIVISM you buffoon.

  21. Bob says:

Question for the Cal Watchdog folks:

So now the Democrats have their super majority how long will it be before we see our first tax increases?

I know most Democrats in the legislature don’t think a 7.5% state sales tax and a 9.3% marginal tax rate at just $48k are high enough.

  22. Bob says:

    Who knows?

Maybe today is the first day of the Great Colliefornia Tax Revolt. People just don’t realize it yet.

  23. CalWatchdog says:

Bob – I am working on a story for tomorrow about the supermajority, and what it means for Californians.

    Katy

  24. Bob says:

    Katy,

Last night Sac Bee had their staff available for questions on their Web site. I asked one of their political reporters what the chances were the Dems would get a super majority and she said virtually none.

I just read the Republican leaders are now confirming the Dems have a super majority.

With that majority being able to override a governor’s veto I think we are now at the mercy of the most radical tax raisers in the legislature.

I think in the short to near term the state is doomed. But I think this is going to eventually create an enormous backlash and anger aimed straight at the Democrats.

  25. wool-comber Leclerc says:

Go to the town square, “put a pinch of incense” on the pagan altar honoring Caesar as god. Then we will find who the heretics are!

  26. NotClauswitz says:

We are so hosed. Welcome to the ignorant Socialist One-Party state Politburo. Srsly? Budget “Back on track” to what? High Speed Trains to nowhere? No it’s back on to Union payoffs: actual funding for education is irrelevant and has always been a red-herring since the money doesn’t get down to the classroom level no matter how much they say it, it only flows UP out of the pockets of our Union Teachurz – but now the Stupidslature desperately need the Teacher’s Union dollars since they have campaigned way beyond their means, and money being the mother’s milk of politics (thanks, Jess Unruh), they need to re-fund and reward their enablers and cronys…

  27. Hondo says:

Lets not forget, there is no more money left to steal. The Dems can raise taxes all they want. That doesn’t mean they will get any more money. That has been shown time and time again.
The only way they get any more money is from Obama and the repubs still hold the house. They may cave a bit on taxes, but on giving giveaways to Kali and Illinois, I think not.
Again, congrats to the libs. Now you have to fix the problems, no excuses. The republicans don’t have near enough power to stop you.
    Hondo…..

  28. NotClauswitz says:

CA Republicans have for along time only been window-dressing, a class of Nomenkaltura in the One Party State who take the blame for being “obstruictionist” the same way “Big Business” or “Big Oil” is demonized for thwarting the Will of the Party. They take the blame and still get to keep their perks – they get paid-off to be Emmanuel Goldstein to the Party’s Big Brother.
But the serious intellectual problems with a One-Party state is that Party members don’t evolve intelligence, instead they become dull and stupid – as evidenced by the inept and poorly written laws that California Legislature constantly produces, full of holes and legal gobbledygook.
Nothing challenges the Party members to be smart and excell, or even how to compete, since they don’t compete against external concepts or ideas but only against each other in an echo-chamber purity-test. It’s not creative or inventive except in a Machiavellian way, they are lazy and shallow and only do just enough – and they come up with bad ideas just to impress the Central Committee to whom they are indebted for their jobs.
To rise to Party prominence is to recite the delusional propaganda and slogans and toe the line, a test of One-Party Catechism and playing favorites with the Central Committee. A fish rots from the head down, and that’s what Socialism always produces, rotten fish that stink: and the CA Legislature is a perfect example.

  29. dave says:

It has become evident that there is now two separate political geographical areas in California. I too believe it time to split the state into two states. Los Angeles, San Francisco and most coastal area hold liberal beliefs, while the rest of the state is more conservative.

  30. Ulysses Uhaul says:

Dys. Thanks for the word spelling….your a prince!

Dems will go for revenue stability…..Prop 13 commercial property taxes and majority vote
for local bonds, fees, property tax increases.

Dys….name calling is so grade school…..

  31. Ulysses Uhaul says:

CWD posters should show some class and stop bashing Ms Grimes….you caveman have no shame; she brings us good stuff….a true Brietbart style journalist!

  32. SeeSaw says:

Dave, the diversity of CA is one thing that makes it special. Who wants one state that is all conservative, and another state that is all liberal. Not me–I would fight tooth and nail against such a proposal.

  33. Pat says:

Well stated NotClauswitz. People who believe a one party rule will solve problems do not read history.

  34. Barb says:

    Excellent read NotClauswitz! Excellent!

  35. Barb says:

One other note on NotClauswitz’s profound statement, the privilege few will be dictating to the proletariat as there is no longer a challenger. None!

For some reason, after reading your take on the eventual demise of California, I am reminded of George Washington’s farewell address published in 1796! He warned of such goings-on with too much party loyalty and should be avoided. That the people must remain true to their values. Anyway, its a great read and was, in his great wisdom, a visionary!

  36. Ulysses Uhaul says:

Republicans on CWD as a lot are not showing concern for human beings.

This election the needy spoke…and the minimum wage doubled with cementing of Obamacare in employer payrolls, for they think someone will pay for their care now…..

A dependency society is cruel..it will include lots of layoffs….and new hires will find low skills, age, dumb degrees, poor grooming, exotic behaviors will lead to continued sitting on the couch.

Republicans best get into turning the little people in positive directions, not handouts, or they will continue to sit in the political corners of our Republic.
