Cops Can Own Banned Machine Guns

Steven Greenhut: Thanks to the efforts of the police lobby and the shameless pandering by Republican and Democratic politicians, police officers have special rights in this state far above those enjoyed by the average citizen. They get professional courtesy for traffic violations and DUIs and can even drive toll-free on toll roads, as an Orange County investigation a few years ago revealed. We’re talking about the passes they get — and their spouses and family members receive — while off-duty. Now the Daily News reports, “Peace officers throughout California have bought more than 7,600 assault weapons that are outlawed for civilians in the decade since state lawmakers allowed the practice, according to data obtained by The Associated Press after it was revealed that federal authorities are investigating illegal gun sales by law enforcement.”

In a free society, officials should not be a special class that receives special privileges. Those are the types of things seen more typically in authoritarian societies. Police officers and other government officials should live by the same laws they enforce on the rest of us. It’s time to start revisiting these matters.

    Free society? Where?

Free societies practice ‘equality under the law’. Cops and elite banksters are rarely prosecuted for their crimes. And if the cops get caught red handed venturing outside the boundaries of their authority by unlawfully harming a citizen or trampling on your civil rights – 95% of the time it results in only a civil lawsuit that punishes the taxpayers – not the cops. The actual violators walk away unscathed financially or legally.

Elite banksters can commit horrendous acts of criminal financial fraud literally collapsing the global economy for many years – and not only are they not held criminally liable but are rewarded for their acts with our taxdollars in form of bailouts. Their nets worths skyrocketed since 2008 while the ordinary citizen saw his net worth decline.

Now with the National Defense Authorization Act the local police forces will become more like occupying armies.

There is a reason the pols give the cops all these special privileges. They need them to control the little people and to protect the ever growing share of wealth that they and their crony friends accumulate in our society.

It’s not going to get better. Look for it to worsen as the economy continues to crumble.

These are the folks who believe, as does the sycophantic legislature, that only cops should be allowed to even own weapons.

Government firefighters and police have received special privileges ever since I can remember my friends and relatives joining the SF Fire and Police Departments in the early 70s. Great job, fantastic pension, free pass on toll roads, no worry about traffic violations, or any other infraction. Both groups feel entitled to steal from the public. There have been many family arguments over these issues, including my own. So it is not surprising that cops would be permitted to purchase assault weapons the public can’t. They are an integrated part of the political system (bankers, politicians, etc…) that fears the public. But until the public wakes-up to this reality, nothing will change.

An Assault Weapon is not a Machine Gun.

    Legally at least.
