Going gets tough, so go on disability
Steven Greenhut: Fullerton Police Chief Michael Sellers has been under fire for his handling of a brutal beating death of a homeless man by as many as six of his men. Rather than answer the tough questions or face possible firing, Chief Sellers took the common course taken by chiefs — he went out on medical leave. He can’t be fired while on such leave, which sets the stage for the inevitable taxpayer-funded disability retirement. This proves once again that in the public sector, there are no punishments — just new sources of benefits. No matter how incompetent you might be or how badly you behave, usually the worst you get is extra paid time off. AUGUST 12, 2011

Perhaps he has caught CHP soft tissue injury syndrome running rampant through CHP officers in their early 50′s.
So true. In the private sector, serious illness can create hostility toward the unfortunate employee. “Is he gonna die? Do you know what this is costing us?”
