This is apparently the latest move in a campaign led by United Foods and Commercial Workers union to apply pressure to retail food outlets such as Fresh & Easy to unionize their employees. Fresh & Easy stores rely heavily on the self-serve checkout process to keep prices low for their customers:

Self checkout stations are great. Only 1 store where I live has them (and only 2 stations) but when I saw relatives in Ohio we used them all the time. But I guess yet another convenience will be outlawed or regulated out of existence by government!

The nanny/mommy state / big brother state is in high gear. Good old, Fiona Ma and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. (Are there any mothers FOR drunk driving?) Who's your mommy? MADD, Phoney Ma...er I mean Fiona Ma and every politician and bureauRat and special interest!

Leave it to government to try and further regulate a victimless crime more than it already has. These morons don't understand that outlawing or cutting off access to highly demanded products leads to the creation of a dangerous black market. Apparently the lessons of prohibition and current drug war in Mexico aren't enough.
