Mr. Mangels:

In this article, I concentrated only on the mandated perpetual spending initiatives, not on the bonds. I wanted to isolate the former category. I might do one on the bonds later.

It would be nice to see some of the interested parties in these initiatives step up and agree to a temporary suspension, or even a permanent reduction.

About as likely as seeing the Easter Bunny.

Did I miss it? What about the bond passed a few years ago for stem cell research? Isn't that supposed to be a few billion dollars?

And I realize the money hasn't been spent yet, but the High Speed Rail Bond initiative needs to be looked at, too. I don't have the numbers right here but that should be worth much more than the total of the initiatives mentioned in this article.

Thanks for the info, though. I've been saying for some time we need to look at which past spending initiatives could be suspended, in not completely repealed.

John,

Criticize lavish pensions all you like. The deserve it. But Prop. 172 was a source of money for local law enforcement from Day One. The notion of shifting that money from seriously strapped counties to feed the state's insatiable maw won't get much traction with the voters, never mind "special interests."
