Nobody said all taxes are bad? Larry, what planet are you on? Don't you know that the Republicans in California are forced to sign a blood oath promising not to raise taxes, period.

What is strange is that the Republicans would rather close schools and parks than tax loopholes. They refuse to tax oil production. Every other state taxes oil production, including liberal bastions like Texas and Alaska. What is strange is that instead of supporting the most vulnerable people in our state--like Alzheimers patients who will be denied home care--the Republicans support the oil companies.

I support raising revenue to meet the needs of our people. Schools are overcrowded, highways are falling apart, our population is growing older and needs more care. That's not "save the world", it's reality here in California. Taxing oil production will bring billions in NEW revenue that we desparately need. I'd even be willing to cut a deal to allow prudent oil drilling off the coast in return for an oil production tax.

StevefromSacto:
You are quite the bomb thrower, aren't you?
Nobody said 'all taxes are bad', yet that is your attack point. Strange.
Let me ask you this: Do you want higher tax RATES, or higher tax REVENUE? There is a difference you know. Raising rates has not historically raised revenue and historically the level of REVENUE has remained at about 20% of GDP regardless of the tax RATE. Therefore the only sustainable path forward is to reduce expeditures to 20% GDP or less, even if it means dropping your favorite 'save the world' programs.

And if the unions would allow bad teachers to be fired, the rest of the education system would improve dramatically!

No, Ken, the simple solution is that ALL tax increases are bad. You think it is better to close schools than tax loopholes. You think we are not allowed to tax oil production (like EVERY other oil producing state does) even though it would help solve the state's budget crisis. You think that you can throw hundreds of thousands of public employees out of work and that will somehow "ignite' the economy--ignoring the taxes they pay and the contributions they make to local economies.

No surprise here. Calls to raise taxes seems like a simple solution to the simple minded. A substantial decrese in tax rates will ignite California's economy and will then increase revenues. Perhaps the protestors sign should read "Raise Revenues" and the other side of the sign read, "Reduce Tax Rates". www.kenhunter.com

I find it very scary that these people are involved with teaching my kids. The organizers for these massive rallys need to all move out of the state and take their "Free Lunch" mindset with them.
