The recent revelations about Nadia Lockyer's alcoholism and drug addiction, which were clearly problems while she was running for Supervisor, have made us see what Schwarzenegger and Jerry Brown's nominations mean. Completely cynical, there was no way they did not have indications of what was going on, but Bill wanted his wife to have the job....

What's almost worse than the rest of it is they don't explain anything. That by itself should be reason for both Lockyers to resign. Never happen though, even with the local press turning very, very slowly against them.

More amusing posts from StevefromSacto. Personally, I've always liked Bill Lockyer. And as Treasurer, lately he's been talking sense about the state's bonds' descent into junk-bond status.

But he's always been a wily politician. As Atty Gen., he took $50K (later returned) from Oracle, a California company, then joined the silly legal jihad against Microsoft, from Washington state. I remember he came to visit us at the Register when I was on the edit board there -- about 1999 -- and we had great fun debating the issue. He kept insisting that "tying" Internet Explorer was crucial to Microsoft's attempt to rule computerdom.

I pointed out that anyone was free to use Netscape (now Mozilla), which was better. He said Microsoft still was a monopolist. Microsoft settled the lawsuit in 2001, after Bush came to power -- having cozied up to Republicans and given them dough (even though Bill Gates is a liberal Democrat).

Lockyer settled, too. When he met with us around that time, he said that he was vindicated because Microsoft agreed to pay the state's legal bills, plus a small penalty.

Looked at more than a decade later, it's all a bit quaint: That was before Google, before Google's Chrome browser, before Apple's resurgence, before Apple's Safari browser (works also on Windows), before the iPhone, before the iPad, before...

Now, the antitrust goons might go after Google. It'll all end when the Chinese and Indians take over the whole computer industry because anti-trust destroyed ours. Thanks, Bill Lockyer.

Larry would rather have "real American" teachers to teach our children that the free enterprise system never fails, that anyone who is poor brought it on themselves, that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, that the President of the United States always deserves respect...(ooops, better scratch that last one!)

Democrat or republican, I get uneasy whenever I hear that another PROGRESSIVE is involved with teaching our children. Such folks tend to try teaching that Mao was a hero and Stalin needs to be considered in context, (what context did either need for murdering millions of their citizens?).

Oooooh! There you go again. The governor doesn't hate Bill Lockyer. He doesn't want to put Lockyer's head on a stick. He chooses someone based on merit rather than partisan ideology. So he is immediately attacked by the rabid right.

As long as you continue to promote treating anyone who isn't 100 percent right-wing as the "enemy," we will never solve our state's problems and Republicans will continue to be in the minority in California. It's just that simple.
